Developer Rates by Tech Stack: What Each One Costs

Developer rates by tech stack vary more inside a single city than the same role varies between two countries. Most rate research misses this, telling you what a developer costs in Poland versus the US when the number you need is what a React developer costs versus an AI engineer.

Country-level benchmarks are useful for a first pass and useless for a budget, which is why developer rates by tech stack are the more practical cut. This article breaks the nearshore rate down by what you are actually hiring, using Poland as the reference market. For the country-level and total-cost views, our software development cost comparison covers those in full.

Developer rates by tech stack move more than geography does

Take one city. A senior React developer and a senior AI engineer, same seniority, same market, same office if you like. The spread between them is wider than the spread between a senior React developer in Poland and one in Romania. That is the finding that matters, and country-level tables cannot show it to you.

Two senior engineers in the same city can differ by more than the same engineer differs between two countries. Geography is the smaller variable.

The practical consequence: a single blended market average applied across a mixed team will overpay for your common stacks and underprice the scarce ones. You never see the overpayment. You do see the underpricing, because sourcing stalls on exactly the roles you needed most, and you find out in week six.

Developer rates by tech stack: four tiers worth budgeting separately

Senior-level hourly bands in Poland, as a reference market. Directional figures to confirm against live quotes.

Senior developer hourly rate bands in Poland by tech stack, with supply conditions
StackSenior, hourlySupply
React and full-stack JavaScript$55 to $90Deepest pool, prices sit low in band
Java and .NETMid-bandSolid supply, consistent demand, predictable
Python backendModest premium over ReactPool shared with data engineering
AI, ML and LLM integration$80 to $130Scarce, and demand still rising

Swipe the table sideways to see all columns.

Cloud and DevOps specialists sit alongside the top tier rather than inside the general bands, for the same reason AI does: the skill is scarce relative to how many teams now need it. Note that the wide senior band overall, roughly $68 to $95 across stacks in Poland, is not vagueness. It is this table compressed into one number, which is exactly the compression you want to undo before you build a budget.

What sets developer rates by tech stack, which is supply

Every rate difference between stacks reduces to the same three questions about the pool of people who can do the work.

  1. How many people can do it
React has the deepest pool in most nearshore markets, which is why its rates sit in the lower half of any band. This is not a quality signal. It is an availability signal, and it works in your favour.
  2. Who else wants them
Python carries a premium over React not because it is harder but because the same practitioners get pulled toward data engineering and API work. The pool is shared across more competing demand, so the price rises even where headcount looks similar.
  3. How fast the skill became necessary
Java and .NET have had decades for supply to meet demand, which is why their pricing is the most predictable of any tier. AI has had a couple of years, which is why it is the least.

That third question is the useful one for planning, because it tells you which of today's premiums will still exist in two years. Scarcity from newness erodes as training pipelines catch up. Scarcity from competing demand does not.

Where AI breaks the nearshore pattern

For most stacks, the nearshore saving against a US equivalent is proportionally similar. AI is the exception: the premium is global, so the gap narrows. A senior AI engineer in Poland commonly runs around $80 to $130 an hour against a meaningfully higher US range, which is still a real difference over a multi-month engagement, but a smaller proportional one than you get on a React hire.

The offsetting factor

Engineers building AI systems inside the EU work under an evolving regulatory framework rather than around it, currently taking shape through the EU AI Act. For a US company shipping into European markets, that practical familiarity with compliance requirements has a value that does not appear anywhere on the rate card. Whether it offsets the narrower proportional discount depends entirely on whether your product touches EU users.

Budgeting a mixed team from developer rates by tech stack

Four rules that follow directly from the tiers above.

  • Price every role separately. Even three roles. A blended figure hides which one will be hard to fill, and that is the single most useful thing to know before you start.
  • Budget the scarce roles first and generously. If the AI hire has to happen, fund it at the top of the band and take the saving on the React hires, not the other way round.
  • Check whether you actually need the premium stack. A meaningful share of roles specified as AI engineering is data engineering with an LLM call at the end, and that is a different, cheaper, more available skill set.
  • Sequence sourcing by scarcity, not by priority. Start the search for the hardest role first even if it is not the most urgent, because the common stacks will still be available in three weeks and the scarce one may not.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which tech stacks cost the most to hire for in nearshore Europe?

AI and ML roles sit at the top by a clear margin, followed by cloud and DevOps specialists. React and other common JavaScript stacks price at the lower half of any given market, because supply is deepest there. Java and .NET sit in the middle with the most predictable pricing.

Why do React developers cost less than Python developers?

Supply. React has the deepest pool of qualified practitioners in most nearshore markets, which holds rates down. Python carries a modest premium because the same skill set is pulled toward data engineering and API work, so the pool is shared across more competing demand.

Does the country or the tech stack matter more for the rate?

Within nearshore Europe, the stack usually moves the number more than the country does. A senior AI engineer and a senior React developer in the same city can differ by more than the same role differs between two nearshore countries.

Are AI and ML engineers cheaper in Europe too?

Generally yes, though the gap tends to be smaller than for other roles, since AI and ML talent commands a premium everywhere in 2026. Confirm current rates for specialized roles before budgeting, since this segment of the market moves quickly.

How should I use stack-level rates when planning a team?

Price each role separately rather than applying one market average across the team. A blended assumption overpays for the common stacks and sets unrealistic expectations for the scarce ones, which stalls sourcing on exactly the roles you need most.

Budget by role, not by country

The country sets the band. The stack sets the position inside it, and that position moves the number more than switching countries would. Price each role against its own supply picture, fund the scarce ones properly, and check that the premium role you specified is actually the role you need.
